"green vision" for green bay???

Today, Milwaukee mayor Tom Barrett said its time for Milwaukee to "think green" and he released his "Green Vision" for the city. The most interesting part about his efforts are the formation of a "Milwaukee Green Team", the recommendation that the city purchase "renewable energy blocks" and encourage citizens to do the same, an effort to form "Green Industry Clusters", and the formation of an Office on Sustainability. He also seems to be trying to deal with the issue of Milwaukee's storm sewer run-off problems.

To read today's announcement from Mayor Barrett go HERE.

I think Green Bay's environmental community needs to work with our own mayor to develop a similar vision for Green Bay, especially considering all of the new construction that is planned for downtown. Hey, that's POSSible!!!

I'm a student at UWGB and there is an effort to get the university to purchase some of it's energy via the WPS Naturewise program. I think we'll find out soon if goes through. This will be a great start and perhaps a source of motivation for others to follow suit.

Green Bay's Mayor Schmitt may be open to some green input. I say that because he recently proposed at a public meeting that attention be given to "green buildings" in the city. He was speaking to 150 people at the annual Mayor's Beautification Committee awards luncheon in the Days Inn. This 30+ year old event gives praise and recognition to building owners who improve their properties or build distinctive new buildings. One longstanding award category is for "conservation." This year that award went to Paul Abrahams for his work on the Baird Creek conservancy. Schmitt said next year there should be a new category for "green building innovation" and he mentioned using recycled materials and roof gardens as examples.

A group of Environmental Science and Policy graduate students at UWGB has been working on a similiar type project to form an environmental plan for this campus. They will present their recommendations at a public presentation at 7 pm, Tues., Dec 6th, in the atrium area of MAC Hall. If anyone is interested in coming.

How do we get the Green Bay mayor interested in doing this for Green Bay? There is potential to get UWGB graduate and undergraduate students in environmental science and policy involved.

I agree, the "Anti-gay" Marriage initiative is definitely a ploy to bring out the vote and help Mark Green become Governor. Governor Green? God help us!!!
