Air Quality Watch March 7-8

The Wisconsin DNR has issued an Air Quality Watch for Particle Pollution effective 8:00 am Sunday, March 7, 2010 through 11:00 pm Monday, March 8, 2010 for Adams, Brown, Buffalo, Calumet, Chippewa, Clark, Columbia, Crawford, Dane, Dodge, Dunn, Eau Claire, Fond Du Lac, Grant, Green, Green Lake, Iowa, Jackson, Jefferson, Juneau, Kenosha, Kewaunee, La Crosse, Lafayette, Manitowoc, Marathon, Marquette, Milwaukee, Monroe, Outagamie, Ozaukee, Pepin, Pierce, Portage, Racine, Richland, Rock, Sauk, Shawano, Sheboygan, St. Croix, Taylor, Trempealeau, Vernon, Walworth, Washington, Waukesha, Waupaca, Waushara, Winnebago, and Wood counties .

The watch is being issued because of the forecast for elevated levels of fine particles in the air. Fine particle pollution is composed of microscopic dust, soot, liquid droplets and smoke particles that are 2.5 microns or smaller. These fine particles come primarily from combustion sources, such as power plants, factories and other industrial sources, vehicle exhaust, and wood burning.

The Air Quality Index is forecast to reach the orange level, which is considered unhealthy for people in sensitive groups. People in those sensitive groups include those with heart or lung disease, asthma, older adults and children. When an air quality watch is issued, people in those groups are advised to reschedule or cut back on strenuous activities during the watch period.

People with lung diseases such as asthma and bronchitis and heart disease should pay attention to cardiac symptoms like chest pain and shortness of breath or respiratory symptoms like coughing, wheezing and discomfort when taking a breath, and consult with their physician if they have concerns or are experiencing symptoms. Fine particle pollution deposits itself deep into the lungs and cannot easily be exhaled. People who are at risk are particularly vulnerable after several days of high particle pollution exposure.

Proctor & Gamble and Deforestation

P&G =

Green Bay is the original home of Charmin. Charmin was first manufactured in 1928 by the Hoberg Paper Company. Today, along with Bounty and Puffs, it is produced here by Proctor and Gamble. Unfortunately, P&G produces these products in a very unsustainable and ecologically destructive manner by clearcutting old-growth forests in Brazil and Canada.

Greenpeace has produced a Recycled Tissue and Toilet Paper Guide to help consumers learn more and make better decisions about these products.

Also, after finally convincing Kimberly Clark to change some of their practices, Greenpeace is now targeting Proctor & Gamble:

Tell Procter & Gamble that you're not the one cutting down forests

After nearly five years of Greenpeace's "Kleercut" campaign, Kimberly-Clark has agreed to stop wiping away ancient forests for disposable products. This is an enormous win for the North American Boreal Forest and all of the wolves, bears, caribou, and songbirds that call the forest home.

However, our work is not done. Tissue giants Procter & Gamble and Georgia Pacific have not committed to protecting ancient forests. Kimberly-Clark has proven that big companies can become big leaders in the battle to save our planet from environmental destruction, it’s time others follow suit.

Green Bay Green Drinks - Dec. 17

Green Bay Green Drinks is a monthly 'social gathering' of environmentalists. We meet every third Thursday of the month at Kavarna Coffeehouse, on Broadway.

We start to gather shortly after 6pm, but don't worry if you can't show up until much later. Peak attendance has been 7:00-9:00 pm so far. The hours you attend will influence who you may meet, however. People come and go all evening until Kavarna closes at 10pm. Kavarna is a smokefree vegetarian coffeehouse/restaurant that sells bottled beers and wine. Soups, salads, chai and juices are among the many other offerings. All ages welcome. Feel free to bring your kids.

If some people suggest that "green" is your middle name, you'll probably find value in Green Drinks Green Bay. At this monthly event, people who have a passion for anything "environmental" meet for friendly conversation. Since we started in April 2005, we've been visited by folks with a wide variety of interests: science, art, politics, music, film, health, psychology, nutrition to name a few. Many work in an environmental field as professionals, educators, entrepreneurs or neighborhood activists. You never know who will be there! If you look elsewhere on the website www.greendrinks.org , you'll see that "Green Drinks" is an international movement.

See http://www.kavarna.com/ for directions to Kavarna at 112 S. Broadway, located on downtown Green Bay's near west side.

Look for the group with a pile of books on the table. First-timers get a free book! Also, please let Crystal (email below) know that you would like to be added to the email reminder list.

Green Book Club - April 8

This month's selection is "SERENA" by RON RASH. We thought we would try some fiction for a change. ALSO, we thought it would be cool, and it would, if people left some comments about the book on this blog post while they were reading it. Seriously, that would be keen AND it would inspire some of us to write more columns on this blog! Our meeting to discuss the book will be on April 8, 6:00, at the Daily Buzz.

Conservation Lobby Day - February 25th

If you care about clean water, clean air, and sporting opportunities, then you are MORE than qualified to attend Conservation Lobby Day 2009! BUT, we know some folks like to get the inside track on the Priority Issues and what the buzz is in the Capitol.

That's why we're hosting a 1-hour statewide conference call on the Priority Issues. Like last year's call, participants will have a chance to discuss the Priority Issues and ask questions prior to Lobby Day on February 25th.

This year, the conservation community will be fighting to Preserve Groundwater, Stop Global Warming, Restore Conservation Integrity, and Protect Drinking Water.

The conference call will be held from 5-6 pm on Wednesday, January 21st.

We welcome everyone to call-in, BUT, we do have a limit on the number of people that can join the call, so please RSVP by clicking here. Once you RSVP, we'll send you the call-in number and agenda.

Conservation Priority in the News: Independent DNR Secretary

Last week, a Conservation Priority made headlines, but it wasn't good news.

Since 1995, citizens like YOU have been calling for a return to an Independent DNR Secretary in order to keep politics out of natural resource decision-making.

But last week, Gov. Doyle's spokesperson announced that Doyle was rethinking his position of support for an Indpendent DNR Secretary.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel quoted Doyle's spokesperson as saying, 'We have to re-evaluate and rethink, really carefully, about decreasing the authority of (the) governor.'

This is bad news if you hunt, fish, hike, or bike.

To pass this Conservation Priority, it's going to take a showing of support like never before. So if you haven't yet, sign up for Conservation Lobby Day today!

Join us on February 25th and make sure your legislators and the Governor know you support an Independent DNR Secretary.

If you would like to submit a letter-to-the-editor letting the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel why you support an Independent DNR Secretary, click here. (200 word limit)Thank you for all your conservation efforts!

Kim Biedermann, Northeast Organizer920-429-9008

PS--You must RSVP for Lobby Day by Feb. 13th!

Green Books Club! - January 14

We are starting a green book club!

Our first book is Hot, Flat and Crowded by Thomas Friedman. The first meeting will take place on January 14th at 6 pm at Kavarna. We will meet the second Wednesday of every month.

Also, because most everyone is pretty busy these days, we are taking two months to finish a book. So, January 14th if you are close to the half-way point (even if you are nowhere near there) you are good to go!

Hope to see you at Kavarna! In the meantime, happy holidays!

Crystal

Green Drinks! Thursday, December 18th

Happy Holidays!

During this wonderful season of giving, we would like to give any new guest at Green Drinks this Thursday, December 18th, a cookie (Alex and Linda make the best chocolate chip cookies ever!) and a free book! We would love for some new faces with fresh perspectives. Please join us as we celebrate the winter solstice (a few days early, but that's ok!) at Kavarna.

On another note, the UWGB Green Drinks has changed meetings from the first Friday of the month to the first Monday of the month.

And finally, we are starting a green books club! The first book is Hot, Flat and Crowded by Thomas Friedman. We will meet the second Wednesday of every month at Kavarna, with our first meeting January 14th at 6 pm. Please feel free to join us if you can and don't feel pressured to read the entire thing at once - we will be reading one book over two months time.

Hope to see you Thursday!
